Our Story
About
As a high school Earth science teacher, I struggled each year to update my lessons with the growing statistics on oceanic garbage patches. During that time, I discovered the Precious Plastic movement and began envisioning how a similar community-based recycling system could take root here in Hawaii. Over the years, I shared the idea with many people, waiting for the right alignment of passion, skills, and purpose. That alignment came through partnerships with Purple Maiʻa, the HPU Center for Marine Debris Research team, and other dedicated community members. Together, we launched Lei Wili at the end of 2025 to turn education, collaboration, and local action into meaningful environmental change.
Mission
Our mission is to reduce plastic waste by focusing on one source of new plastic at a time and creating recycled products that replace those materials locally. We educate and empower our community to take meaningful action through accessible recycling practices. By partnering with organizations, schools, and local businesses, we build a collaborative system for participation. In doing so, we create opportunities that support both environmental sustainability and the local economy.
Vision
Our vision is clean oceans and clean beaches free from plastic waste. We are committed to eliminating non-essential new plastics by identifying specific sources and targeting them for reduction and eventual replacement. We believe products should be made on island or in-state using recycled materials whenever possible. By prioritizing local production, local people, and local products, we strengthen both our environment and our community.
